Rita was born in Edmonton and moved to Peers with her family as a teenager, where she met and married Bud Monsma. She loved to mother, volunteer, and share her gift of hospitality providing untold blessing to many in Peers, and later in Edmonton. After raising three kids, she returned to school obtaining a GED and a Bachelor of Arts in her 40’s. She developed a talent for watercolor painting alongside her delight in being a grandma and a great-grandma. Reading and gardening brought her pleasure, and she was eager to discuss books and share plants. Rita married Arie VandenBerg in 1989, and they served together in the Port Alberni Christian Reformed Church until Arie’s retirement. Rita’s faith sustained her through the death of her son and various health setbacks; like Job she declared, “I know that my Redeemer lives”.

A Private Service will be held in accordance with Rita’s wishes.

In lieu of flowers, Rita requested Memorial Donations be made to the Edmonton Native Healing Centre, (11813 123 St NW #101, Edmonton, AB, T5L 0G7) one of the many places she donated her time and gifts.
