Obituary

With heavy hearts, the family announces the deaths of William (Bill) Hurlburt and Isobel (Dev) Hurlburt. Bill died at age 89 following complications from a heart attack. Isobel died at age 90 following complications from pneumonia.

Bill was born in Vegreville, Alberta to Stan and Helena Hurlburt. He graduated from the University of Alberta with an L.L.B. in 1949. Bill had a long and illustrious career in the legal profession. He garnered many accolades and awards, including an appointment as Queen's Counsel in 1969, an honorary Doctorate of Laws in 1997, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. Bill was a member of the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta for many years, and was appointed Professor Emeritus after he retired from that position.

Isobel was born in Toronto, Ontario to Leslie and Blanche Devitt. Isobel moved to Alberta to pursue a career as an occupational therapist. She married Bill in 1950, and retired home to run the household and care for the children. Once the children were in school, Isobel returned to the University of Alberta part time, graduating with a B.A. in Anthropology in 1969. Isobel worked on the excavation of a number of archeological sites in Alberta. In 1977, the Provincial Museum published Isobel's monograph on faunal remains found at the Fort White Earth archeological site.

Bill and Isobel had many interests in addition to their professional careers and their family, including an avid interest in travel. When Bill was conducting research for his book, Bill and Isobel spent a year travelling around the world, an unforgettable experience for the both of them.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to all of the staff of Nursing Station 8E at the Misericordia Hospital. The care they provided to Bill and Isobel was superb and they were able to arrange for Bill and Isobel to share a room. The family cannot begin to express how much they appreciate the fact that a couple who had been married for 66 years were able to spend their final days together.

A Memorial Service for Bill and Isobel will be held at Robertson-Wesley United Church, 10209-123 Street, Edmonton, on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lung Association of Alberta, the Covenant Foundation, or the charity of the donor's choice.

In Loving Memory of
William and Isobel Hurlburt
