Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our father and grandfather, Barry Tilley, on August 4, 2020 at the age of 79 years.

Barry is predeceased by his wife, Sharon; and will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Lori (Brian) and Lisa (Jo). He will be forever cherished by his grandchildren, Malori (Geoff), Mason (Kelsey); and his great grandson, Quintin. He also leaves to mourn his brothers, Wayne (Lorna) and Kenny; sisters-in-law, Judy and Deb (Hank) Leskie; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

Barry was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Gertie Tilley; his twin brother, Garry; and his sister, June.

Born in Brandon, MB, his family spent many years in Lynn Lake, MB before moving to Sherwood Park in 1963. Barry and Sharon enjoyed many aspects of community life including time with friends from the Strathcona County Fire Dept and the Cutty Sark Club which he fondly referred to as The Lake. In later years, they also enjoyed traveling to their winter home in Mesa, Arizona.

When the couple first moved to Alberta, Barry worked at Union Carbide and volunteered with the local fire department. In 1965, he was hired as one of the first career fire fighters in the county and he proudly served as the Deputy Chief from 1975 until his retirement in 1994. He was an enthusiastic volunteer in many capacities; always willing to lend a hand and he held various executive positions both in the community and at The Cutty Sark Club.

Dad will be remembered for his kind and selfless nature, his fun loving character and his impish smirk. He loved hockey, music, crib, and time with friends. He also had a very special place in his heart for fur babies of all kinds.

He will be terribly missed.

Special thanks to the multidisciplinary team that supported Dad over the past few years including the caring and compassionate staff at Bedford Village and the Sherwood Park Adult Day Program.

A Celebration of Barrys life will be held at the Bethel Lutheran Community Church, 298 Bethel Drive, Sherwood Park on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at 1:00 pm. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, attendees will be limited to family, invited guests, and friends affiliated with Strathcona County Emergency Services and The Cutty Sark Club.

Barry fought a long and hard battle with lung disease. In the end, his respiratory failure was largely due to asbestosis and interstitial lung disease, which has been identified as an occupational threat for firefighters.

Donations may be made in his name to the Alberta Lung Association, PO Box 4500 STN South, Edmonton, AB, T6E 4T7.

In Loving Memory of
Barry Tilley
