Condolences

Robin was an outstanding human being and a kindred spirit going back to Glenn Martin's Ed CI class in 1971-72. He always stood out even then as a serious-minded, but good-humored fellow who was really interested in teaching and young people. What a long, notable education career he had! Glen Kirkland and I would often hook up with him at ELAC conventions and, more recently, I got to appreciate Robin even more through the Stroll of Poets readings. He and you were always people I looked forward to chatting with to get the latest in Smith world. I imagine his loss has been immense and deeply felt in Arlington and hereabouts. He was definitely one of a kind, a Real Person, and a warm empathetic friend to many. It must be very difficult without his kind, supportive words and actions nearby, Janet. But we were all very lucky and blessed to have known such a vibrant, remarkable man. I will always remember Robin fondly, with affection. Take care. Stay well. Richard (and Karen)

It is with profound sadness that I write this tribute to my friend and colleague, Robin. I met him in 1982 when I assumed the position of Vice-Principal at Memorial Composite High School, one shared with Robin for three years. Even though I had already completed one year as a high school VP in another jurisdiction, I considered myself a novice and greatly appreciated the guidance and support he provided. He was deeply devoted to his students and profession and embraced both with a bigger-than-life enthusiasm. A particularly fond memory was Robin coaxing me to join the weekly staff hockey games he organized, even though I had forgotten how to skate! He gave me the same unwavering support and encouragement that he extended to staff and students for which I was truly grateful. I was always quite impressed with his intellect—knowledge about almost everything (which he was always willing to share!), his keen wit, his loquacious style and his great sense of humour. He embraced life and immersed himself deeply and passionately into all of his endeavours, of which there were many and wide-ranging (some of which I only recently discovered!). I regret that I lost touch with him over the years but will always treasure my memories of him, grateful for the impact he had on me during my formative years as a school leader. My short tenure at Memorial Comp was certainly a highlight of my career, thanks in large part to my relationship with Robin and the staff. I will always keep him and his family in my prayers. Rest In Peace my friend, satisfied with the life you lived to the fullest.

Mr Smith was without a doubt my favourite teacher. He always seemed to teach across to his students not down to them. He encouraged creativity and rewarded “thinking outside the box” He taught us to listen with more than our ears and made remembering information important and fun. He will be missed but fondly remembered. My heart goes out to his whole family and all those whom his life touched. I was privileged to be in the first Graduating class of Spruce Grove Composite High School (1977)
