Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather. Stan passed away peacefully at University of Alberta Hospital where he was admitted in April.

Stan was a hard worker from a young age delivering telegrams for the C.N., then following in the footsteps of his father and brother in the business of railroading. Stan completed his machinist apprenticeship for the Canadian National Railway in 1950 in Edmonton. He loved his work on steam locomotives transitioning to diesels and eventually management, working in Jasper, Edmonton and Calgary. By the mid-1970s he worked with the Canadian Transport Commission specializing in dangerous commodities until his retirement in 1986. After retirement he enjoyed travelling in his R.V. often visiting family and wintering in Arizona. A virtual encyclopedia of knowledge on steam locomotives he stayed involved until his mid-80s in advising and certifying various operating steam locomotives such as former CN 6060. Stan was highly independent and a good friend to many, always available to lend a helping hand.

Stan is survived by his three children, Ernie (Amanda) Chappell of Nashville, Tennessee, Jean (Bob) Suvan of London, England, Clarence (Julie) Chappell of Albuquerque, New Mexico; grandchildren, Andrew Suvan, Lauren(Nick) Floyd, Evan Chappell, Elliott Chappell and Emerson Chappell; great-grandchildren Alice, Matilda and Henry; sister Dorothy Grovum of Edmonton; and many nieces and nephews.

Stan was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Elizabeth; siblings, Hazel (Ben) Hansen, Gladys (Clarence) Benschoter, Florence (Dick) Beckett and Cecil (Ann) Chappell.

The family would also like to acknowledge and thank the U of A hospital units 4G2 and 5G2, as well as neighbours, Bob & Marianne Willet for the wonderful care and support these last months.

Visitation will be at Foster & McGarvey Funeral Home, 10011 114 Street NW, Edmonton from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday July 16, 2016 followed by committal at 1:00 p.m. at Edmonton Cemetery 11820 107 Avenue NW, and a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 p.m. at Foster & McGarvey.
