Obituary

After a brave fight Richard Maximilian Steiner passed away on July 3, 2021, at the age of 79. He is survived by his wife Bonnie; former wife, Dianne Smyth; children: Karen, Michael (Liana) and Kathryn (Joseph) Alves; grandchildren: Kate and Caroline Harrell, James and Kyla Steiner, and Paulo, Matthew, and Alex Alves.

He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Nadine Steiner.

Richard was born during World War II in Shanghai, China, at the time of the Japanese occupation. His family survived the war and returned to Saigon for a brief time before leaving for new adventures first in Chile and then in Canada, their final destination being Calgary.

Surviving an unstable family life that left him to his own devices at a young age, he managed to build a successful career in television starting first at a small station in Kelowna and later with the CBC in Edmonton, his last position being that of Technical Producer. His final career move was to the Government of Alberta where he served as an Executive Director for the Public Affairs Bureau as well as the Queen’s Printer for the Province of Alberta.

Although there were disagreements, Richard was exceedingly proud of all his family, and the successes they achieved and will continue to achieve throughout their lives.

Things he loved most were being with Bonnie, visiting with family, travelling with his truck and trailer especially in the mountains, and extra especially in Waterton National Park, sailing, drinking beer, arguing with friends over dinner, solving technical and other problems even when people didn’t want them solved, having a big garage and really good tools and doing what he thought was right. He will be missed.

Private family ceremony will be held. Cremation has already taken place.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories.

In Loving Memory of
Richard Maximilian Steiner
