David Geddes

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of David Geddes on January 12, 2022. Dave is survived by his daughter, Kathleen (Ron); son, Keith (Michelle); grandchildren: Madeline, Kaden, Naomi, and Julia; and his partner and “Travelling Companion”, Helen. He was predeceased by his wife, Eunice (2010), and he was the last of the Geddes clan of four brothers and two sisters.

Dave was born in in the Village of Fochabers, Scotland on April 9, 1930. He was nine years old when WWII broke out, and he had many memories and stories about those challenging years. He quit school when he was 14 to work as a bicycle courier, delivering telegrams for the village post office, and later worked for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in Dumbarton.

Dave moved to Canada on his 21st birthday in 1951, where he worked as a clerk for the Hudson’s Bay Company in the Northwest Territories. He later moved to Edmonton where he went back to school, earning his high school diploma and eventually a University degree in Education. It was also during his early years in Edmonton that he met his wife Eunice, to whom he was married for 48 years. Dave and Eunice settled in St. Albert, where he started teaching at Paul Kane High School in 1963 as an English and History teacher, retiring as the school librarian. He was an active citizen of St. Albert and was awarded an Alberta Centennial Medal (2005) in recognition of his achievements and contributions to the community. He was a member of the St. Albert Historical Society, the Retired Teacher’s Association, and the local chapter of Amnesty International.

He was a lover of the arts – music, theatre, and especially literature. His passion for reading inspired him to write, and he went on to author several books and published articles. As a great storyteller, he loved regaling people about his adventures working on Scottish railroad and his travels around the globe.

He was known for being socially verbose, quick-witted, and knowledgeable about … everything. He will be greatly missed.

A Private Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2022. We welcome anyone to join the livestream beginning at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army or local food bank would be greatly appreciated.

In Loving Memory of
David Geddes
