Obituary
On August 30, 2022, Clara Witten (Smit) of Edmonton passed away at the age of 94.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Alice (Arthur), Rita (Hans), John, Ralph (Grenada), Stan (Karina); her grandchildren, Mark (Robyn), Lisa (Rene), Kara (Arnold), Steven (Sarah), Amy (Eric), Cherie (Doug), Jon, Brent (Amy), Darrell (Alison), Marlow, Jeremy, Graham (Beth), Karley (Bennett), Katie; her 16 great grandchildren; and her siblings, Clarence, Grace, and Alice. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Martin; her daughter, Marlene; and her sisters, Jenny and Henny.
Clara was born in Balkbrug, Overijssel, the Netherlands on August 7, 1928. She was the third child in a family of six. She grew up on a small farm and loved to work outdoors with her father and brother. In 1954, Clara immigrated to Canada with her mother and two younger sisters. In that same year, she met Martin Witten, who also came from the Balkbrug area, and within six months they were married. They raised five children in Beverly in the east end of Edmonton.
Clara took pride and joy in being a homemaker, but she also devoted much time and energy to church and community work. She was a sweet and loving mother to her children and the best grandma.
