Obituary

On April 6, 2019, Dr. R. Gordon McIntosh passed away peacefully in Edmonton, surrounded by family. Gordon was born and raised in Saskatoon. After obtaining a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan, Gordon concluded that teaching was his professional calling and completed a Ph.D. in Education at Harvard University. He and his young family moved to Edmonton in 1968, attracted by the mandate of the provinces new Alberta Human Resources Research Council. Two years later, he accepted a position in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta. In retirement, Gordon remained closely involved with the U of A as Professor Emeritus. He was very proud of his long association with the institution.

Gordon was dedicated to his wife for over 60 years Norma (nee Pirie); son Bob (Rolina van Gaalen); daughters Marcie (Martin Coutts) and Patti; and brother Ken (Candis Bod). He was extremely proud of his five grandchildren, Jonathan, David, Anna, Robert and Brendan; and his four great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Callum, Jana, and Shea. It will have been a source of deep regret to him that he was not in a position to follow their accomplishments for a longer period of time. Gordon was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Mabel McIntosh.

Gordon was a passionate reader, eager to discuss C.P. Snow, Anthony Trollope or the latest John Le Carr with others who shared his taste for fine books. He also enjoyed and valued strong friendships, some extending over many decades.

His life was earnest,
His actions kind,
A generous hand,
And an active mind.
Anxious to please,
Loath to offend.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful caregivers in 5F3 at the University of Alberta Hospital for their attentive care over the last four weeks. In accordance with Gordons wishes, a private family service has occurred.
