Obituary

Hennie Peters, 84, beloved sister, wife, mother, oma and great oma, returned to her heavenly home after passing away unexpectedly, on March 4th, 2021.

Hennie was born in Barrhead, AB on September 18, 1936 to Sophie and Henry Kippers, where she and her siblings grew up on their family farm. Hennie married Henderikus “Rieks” Peters on June 17, 1955 and together they raised their four children, Harold, Simon, Sylvia and Peter, and ran a dairy farm in the Dutch farming community of Neerlandia. After selling the farm, the family moved to Uncas where Hennie was a cook at the Emmanuel Home for several years before settling in Edmonton where Rieks and Hennie became the celebrated custodian duo at West Edmonton Christian School until retirement.

In her retirement years, Hennie and Rieks traveled in their 5th wheel across Western Canada visiting friends and family. Remaining social until the end, Hennie spent her last years with Rieks, living together in the Emmanuel Home with many family and friends.

In remembering Hennie, it has become obvious that she is seen in the same light by all who were close to her. She was a strong, sensible, and down to earth woman of strong faith, who was always willing to help others. She had a great sense of humor and was still sharp as a tack and as quick as a whip at 84. Even though she could often only hear a percentage of what was being said, she was always a part of the conversation and made us feel like we were being listened to. She was a devout Christian and member of Providence Canadian Reformed Church. Her faith in God and her consistency provided stability to those around her. We always knew to find her sitting at the end of the exact same church pew every Sunday. She will be remembered by her family for her soft skin, tender touch and firm hugs that always lasted a couple seconds longer than we would expect them to.

We will cherish memories of her every time we snuggle up with one of her many hand knit blankets, sit down to a bowl of Sunday soup or snack on one of her famous oatmeal coconut cookies - if one of us can manage to nail the recipe the way that she did.

Hennie is survived by her husband, Henderikus; her siblings: Jean (Kees-deceased), Tina (Joe-deceased), Henry (Mary), Grace (Pete-deceased), Gladys (Dick), Linda (Harry), Lennert (Cecile-deceased), Clarence, Christine (Henk) and Andrew (Pieta); children: Simon (Connie), Sylvia (Marty) and Peter; grandchildren: Danielle (Mark), Melanie (Trevor), David, Melissa (Ken), Terri (Darnell), Karen (Kevin); 14 great grandchildren; and dog Barney. Hennie is preceded in death by her parents, Sophie and Henry Kippers and son, Harold.

A private viewing will take place on Thursday, March 11, 2021, due to covid-19 restrictions space is limited, if you wish to attend, please contact Sylvia Vanderveen at [email protected].

Hennie’s Funeral will be held on March 12, 2021 at 2:30 pm, for her immediate family. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream of the funeral can be watched using the video camera icon to the right.

“Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.” - 2 Corinthians 5:6-8
