Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Kiran Evelyn Cahoon in Edmonton. She leaves behind her loving husband Faron, daughters Tessa and Andrea, parents Rakesh Bhatnagar (Barbara Losier) and Margaret Russell (David Borgstrom), sisters Susheila Muma (Ryan), Rita Terry and dog family Cooper and Bugsy. She was the first grandchild to her maternal grandparents Andy and Lynn Russell.

She will be missed by a large extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada, India and around the world. Her life was full of wonderful experiences: a Kiwanis music award for contemporary piano, a Rotary year in France, her academic years at the University of Ottawa and Carlton (MPA); she produced an exceptional English club at a Gatineau school, visited colleagues in China, and still kept up with her buddies from Richard Secord Elementary School.

Kiran dedicated her career to the public service and returned to Edmonton with the Alberta Treasury, then Western Economic Diversification, and most recently the Northern Forestry Centre, where her responsibilities included liaison with Indigenous and Metis communities.

Kiran's name in hindi means a ray of light and her personality reflected that so well. Kiran was always someone that friends could turn to. These friends now provided support and companionship during the past two difficult years as she faced Ewing Sarcoma a rare form of cancer. A huge thank you to GP Dr. Hany Siha, the Palliative Care Team at the Grey Nuns Hospital, specialists at the Cross Cancer and Glenrose Hospitals, Alberta Health Services Home Care and the ministry staff of St. Paul’s United Church.

A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Catherine MacLean on Saturday, May 8 at 11 a.m. MST. Pooja will be held at the Temple. Her ashes will be placed at Mount Pleasant Cemetery at a future date.
