Obituary

Ida passed away at the age of 92 years, leaving her children Mark (Lynne), Jan (Jud Welliver), and Marilyn Phipps (Geoff); grandchildren: Neil, Patti Sue, Dan, Dawn, and Miles; three great grandchildren, as well as nieces Evelyn Caskey (Dean) and Beverley Jaremko (Gordon) and their families.

She was predeceased by her husband Jim; sisters: Edythe, Doris, Ila, Hattie, Esther, Mildred and Alta. She was raised in Elk Point, Alberta, to a family in which all eight daughters received post-secondary education. Ida studied music and business at Alberta College in Edmonton and was a very talented pianist. She received a Citation Award from the City of Edmonton for her contributions to providing music for senior citizens, and entertained at Klondike Days and other venues. She kept the home fires burning while Jim was over seas in World War II, and nurtured him back to health.

Ida delighted others with her energy, ability to cook a turkey dinner for a crowd, quickly whip up a homemade pie, garden, show a sense of humor and her refusal to let her age slow her down.

Ida and Jim were active members of the War Amputations of Canada, during which time they made life long friends. She played the war time songs on many occasions to entertain at special events and served as president of the War Amps Ladies Auxiliary.

She travelled the world from Hawaii, Africa, China, Europe and the South Pacific.

The family thanks staff station 5F2 at the University of Alberta Hospital, St. Josephs Hospital palliative care and Dr. E. Vetsch for their compassionate care for Ida.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the War Amps of Canada, 2827 Riverside Drive, Ottawa, ON, K1V 0C4 would be appreciated.

A Celebration of Life of Idas life will take place on Saturday December 10, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Foster and McGarvey, 10011-114 Street, Edmonton.
